A Friday Find

Earlier this week, Mathieu Ravier tweeted his recreation of a North By Northwest scene in the very room it was shot. Super cute!

Have a great weekend (and last day of August!)

Uncanny casting

I'm a big fan of Jesse Plemons ever since he payed the lovable Landry on Friday Night Lights and I am very excited to see he is playing the son of Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master. Yes!

But do you know who else I so desperately want him to act next to? Matt Damon. On screen they have the same presence and even mannerisms at times.

Can you see it? Apparently, Plemons played the younger Matt Damon in All The Pretty Horses, but that's not what I'm after. I want a full movie, multiple scenes, the two of them side by side. Someone in Hollywood please! Make this happen!!

I'm Gonna Make It Better

Pretty cool typographic video from Sebastianbap on Vimeo AND/OR a manifesto for designers.

Perfect lines

A charming poster for the New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) by Wing.

Music for Mondayitis

Thanks for you patience while I was ill last week. I am feeling MUCH better now. I wanted to kick the week off with some musical funny-ness. The clip above is titled Door Does Impression of Miles Davis  which doesn't need any explaining. The clip below, is my favourite Miles Davis song My Funny Valentine. Ahhh Jazz.

A week off

Forgive me, but I must take a week off. I'm too unwell to manage the blog, emails and my job.

I am however updating my 'designed' board on pinterest a fair amount as it's a great place for me to save relevant work resources. So if you're looking for inspiration head over there.

Please check back next Monday for my usual blend of posts.

Yep, this week was a right off. I don't even feel better after 2.5 days in bed. Wish me well, and have a great weekend.

Design idea: A logo that evolves it's theme every six weeks.

Music for Mondayitis: Friends and familly

It's always a long story when you end up at a gig for 3 bands you have never heard of, so I will skip the story and just say that New York band Friends put on the best show I've ever accidentally ended up at. Their song I'm His Girl has since been constantly loop in my head.

Today's second track is from Haim, a group of “three sisters and a mister" from California. I discovered these guys last week via the Time article 11 Great Bands You Don’t Know (But Should). Read it!

A Friday Find

Hey team. Hope you've all had a great week in blog-land as well as on real land (or on water, if you live on a boat).

What's the weekend hold for you? I'll be going book shopping clearly, and praying that Sydney's sun comes back. You?

I really want to get my hands on this book that I found in the archives of the brilliant graphic design blog September Industry.

As the title implies, Graphic Design for Fashion opens the door to the world of graphic design for fashion bringing together a well-curated selection of contemporary work, accompanied by interviews in which the studios reveal something of their process for expressing themselves creatively and exclusive insights into the projects themselves.

Frank Chimero, designer and design writer has a library section on his site that's made me realise I haven't read a proper design book in over 4 years. For writers he recommends Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird which also I recommend to every writer I meet. So based on that, I can presume the other recommendations are top notch.

And as I wrote the tittle of this post, I remembered the web platform book.ish that has some incredible branding and a great logo to boot.

Do you have any great design or writing books you could recommend to me? Better still, how many on Frank Chimeros list have you read? My score is a measly 4.

Ballet at 1000 frames per second

Marina Kanno and Giacomo Bevilaqua from Staatsballett Berlin perform several jumps captured in slow motion at 1000 frames per second. Directed by Simon Iannelli & Johannes Berger.

Watching the Olympics, I have become fascinated by athleticism and what the body can achieve. This video fits into the fascination.

I found a great new font this week, the hand painted Cocobella at YouWorkForThem. While the client I found it for didn't approve it, I still bought it and will find a use for it one day soon.

It's currently on sale for just $14.50.

If youre interested in hand drawn typefaces you'll probably get a fonty kick out of my post on How To Choose A Hand Drawn Font.

Faces on screen

This video, Faces: 105 of Cinema's Most Beautiful Close-Ups should be renamed Faces: 105 of Cinema's Most Beautiful Moments because they're really less about the camera technique and more about the acting. A highlight: 1:47 - Lauren Bacall - wow.

The Other Woman

If you have watched the latest season of Mad Men then you might be interested in this discussion on The Daily Beast about the episode titled The Other Woman. (A three word non-spoilery reminder of the episode would be to say: Joan, Jaguar, partners.)

Show creator Matthew Weiner and star Christina Hendricks offer an oral history of the heartbreaking, Emmy-nominated Joan episode, the first of a two-part conversation.

Hendricks: There were very few options for women at this time at work. As a single mother, how do you rise at work? How do you make more money? How do you support your family? Luckily, we have a lot more options these days. It’s not fair to compare the situation to 2012, but people can’t help it because that’s where we live, and that’s what we do, and that’s who we are. We get emotional, thinking, “I would never do that. I can’t believe it.” Well, you would never do it now.

If you've seen it, what are your thoughts on the episode. I will reply with mine. I'd like to keep the post spoiler free if that's okay!

So what are you up to this weekend?

Where Gilda and hand lettering meet

Today I discovered the site We Love Typography, which I wish I knew about ages ago. You should check it out. This poster really stood out to me and I thought it would be worth posting along with a link to Camilla of nao me mande flores post on Rity Hayworth as Gilda.

She’s so pretty, so sweet and so sexy…
They really don’t make muses like they used to.

Inspired delight

Sufjan Stevens Concert Trailer: Age of Adz / Prospect Park from Asthmatic Kitty on Vimeo.

I'm currently working on video designs for a live stage show and hunted down this Sufjan Stevens promo as inspiration. The Age of Adz tour was a true visual feast and in my top 3 concert experiences of all time.

There's so much visual goodness to this: neon, costumes, dancing, wings, animation, the lighting! Ahh. Did anyone else see this tour?
